Manali is easy and it is busy. If you have seven days and tolerance for mountain roads, the valleys on either side of it are a different holiday altogether.
Tirthan is the gentlest option — trout streams, forest walks and homestays, roughly two hours off the main highway.
Spiti needs acclimatisation and a plan. Go via Shimla and return via Manali once the pass opens, never the reverse in a hurry.
Chitkul, at the end of the Sangla valley, is a single-road village with a view that justifies the drive. Carry cash and expect patchy network.
